Literary Essay on Parrot in the Oven

Victor Martinez’s book, ” Parrot in the Oven” takes place in the 1990s in California. Manny, a teenager with a bad home life just wants to be normal for once, but his father is making that almost impossible. One lesson in the story is that even when life is tough you have to hold your head up high and get through it.

As it says above, the theme in Victor Martinez’s book is even when life is tough you have to hold your head up high and get through it. This is supported when Manny and Nardo have to go work in a pepper field in the scorching heat. They do this because there father is too busy wasting all of their money gambling and drinking.  Another way the theme shows in the beginning, is when Manny cannot get into a better school. Even though Manny has  good grades, he cannot get into this better school that is on the rich side of town. Manny’s mother thinks this is because of their race and financial issues. Manny has to sometimes go through unfair treatment just because of his race or financial situation.

In the middle of the book, Manny goes through several hardships such as his father almost shooting Manny’s mother, Manny’s grandmother dies, and his sister Magda has a miscarriage. These are very important plot events because even though all of this is happening so quickly on top of his normal home life, Manny continues on and doesn’t complain about it to anyone. There is one very important thing that also happens in this part of the book. Manny almost shoots his younger sister Pedi with a rifle. This is of course on accident completely, because Manny would never do anything to hurt his sisters. This event happens before Magda’s miscarriage. This piece of information is important for what happens later at the end of the book. One day, Magda and Manny were supposed to be watching Pedi. Magda told Manny to watch her because she wanted to go out. Manny asked where she was going but she refused to tell. Manny thinks if Magda had not have left, then he would have never almost shot Pedi. If Manny would have shot Pedi he would have felt so guilty and that would have just added on to everything that has already happened.

At the end of the book, the theme kind of disappears for a little bit. In a way Manny just gives in for a little while. Manny decides he was going to go to a party a girl’s dad invited him to. The truth is however, is that the girl didn’t want Manny there, her father just sent him there to keep an eye on her. So, the girl decides to stick a group of tough boys on him. They beat him up and make him leave. The other thing Manny does is he decides to join a gang. This means he has to go through an “initiation” to get in. That initiation is getting beaten up by the gang members. After Manny is in the gang, he finds out that Eddie is the father of the baby that Magda had a  miscarriage with. He was angry, but decided not to say or do anything. The last bad choice that Manny makes is he decides that he is going to go with Eddie to try and rob someone. Eddie grabbed the purse and started to run and Manny was trying to catch up to him to get some of the money that was in the purse. But, someone called the cops. Luckily a nearby witness told the police that Manny was trying to stop Eddie from getting away with the purse. While Manny did make some bad choices, you still have to look at what type of behavior he grew up seeing from his father. In the end all ended well. Manny’s father went back to work, and life for Manny and his family was not to bad anymore.

As you can see, Manny has to go through many hardships such as providing for his family. This shows how bad Manny’s life is because instead of his father working he wastes all the family’s money on alcohol. He still gets through this and carries on. Then, a series of bad things happen. Magda has a miscarriage, his grandmother dies, and his father almost shoots his own wife. But, Manny still got through it without making bad choices. At the end however, he kind of gave in, but then saw that he had made bad choices and got out of them. In the end, all turned out okay for Manny because he didn’t let his home life get in the way of him living and carrying on with his life. In conclusion, even when life is tough, you have to hold your head up high and get through it.

Introduction to Parrot in the Oven

Parrot in the Oven does not really say where this is taking place, but it is somewhere near the Sierra Desert in the United States. The time period is around the 1990s. Nardo and Manny describe this place as scorching hot, dry and crisp, and miserable. You can tell that it is summer because they are working in a chili pepper field, in the extremely hot sun, and the insane heat. Compared to where I live, it is extremely hot, and no one would be allowed to go  outside if it was this hot.

Manny is a teenager trying to get on his father’s good side, but nothing seems to work. His father(the alcoholic) thinks  his son is a coward and never does anything. Manny’s dad calls Manny a Perico or parrot. Perico is coming from a Spanish folktale about a parrot that is complaining how hot it  is in the shade when the whole time the parrot was really in an oven. The dad calls him this because Manny is gullable. The reason I mention Manny’s father is because he influences Manny by trying to get him to be someone he is not. Manny is different from me because if my father was not happy for who I was, then I would not try to change myself. I would not change myself for anyone unless it was for a good reason. That is all I have for the introduction of Parrot in the Oven by Victor Martinez, it is a  great book and I hope you will read it someday.

Hurricane Harvey: The Damage it has Done

It was a hot, muggy day on Friday, August 25, in Houston, Texas. This just so happened to be the day that Hurricane Harvey hit the southern shores of the United States. Particularly, it hit Texas, Louisiana, and the Caribbean. Harvey was a Category 3 hurricane, and even though it was kind of a medium size hurricane, it still caused extensive damage.

Even though Hurricane Harvey was only a Category 3, as stated above, it caused a lot of damage. This damage was caused mostly by water. You may be asking yourself, how could water have  possibly done that much damage? The answer to that is force. Water has a lot of force when it gets moving, and it will eventually take out anything in its path. Just imagine, if you lived in Texas, what would you do if you came out of your house and the water in the street was up to your waist. How would you feel? Many people have suffered tragic losses such as their homes, many, if not all, of their possessions, and some, even a family member’s life.

Hurricane Katrina is the most expensive hurricane in history, costing 108  billion dollars….. or at least  it used to be.Scientists expect the recovery from Hurricane Harvey will cost 70 to 250 billion dollars. The water damage will be the most expensive because of mold, and anything the water has touched has to be replaced. Houston says that it will take years to recover from this devastating hurricane.

In the first four days of Harvey hitting Texas, it brought 40 inches of water into the southern cities of Texas. This amount of water ended a record 12 year drought. Some may consider this drought being broken a good thing, but most say all of the water has ruined their homes.  Miss Freimuth, who has never been in a hurricane before says, ” My cousins, who live down in Houston, said that nothing of theirs has been affected by the hurricane. They were able to get to high ground.”. This family was one of the very few people that were so lucky.

As you can see, many people are struggling in Texas, and there are some ways that you and your community can help. Even if you are hundreds of miles away, you can still help by sending food, supplies, and any other necessary items needed to survive. If you do live in Texas, you can volunteer for the American Red Cross. As you can see, Harvey has hit Houston very hard, damaging and devastating people’s lives. Find out how you can help Texas in their long and hard recovery from Hurricane Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey: The Damage it has Done (Rough Draft)

On Friday August,25, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and Louisiana as well as many countries in South America. It was a Category 3 hurricane that devastated many people in the south. The damage it caused was very extensive. It damaged homes, vehicles, and just about anything in its path. But how did Harvey cause so much damage, even though it was only a Category 3? The answer to that is water. According to meteorologists, water did the most damage during the hurricane.  Just imagine, if you live in Texas, what would happen if you came out of your house one and there was multiple feet of water in the street. How would you feel? Many people have suffered tragic losses because of Harvey. Many have lost their homes, all of their possessions, and some, even a family member’s life.

Hurricane Harvey has caused a lot of damage, as you may know. It has caused so much damage that it is expected to be the most costly hurricane in history. While Hurricane Katrina was the most costly hurricane at 108 billion dollars, Hurricane Harvey is expected to cost much more. With extensive water damage pretty much everywhere in the affected area, that is supposed to be the most costly. This money will cover the rebuild of houses, buildings, and all of the cars and signs that were ruined by the hurricane. Houston expects that it will take years to fully recover from Hurricane Harvey.

In the first four days of Harvey hitting Texas, it brought 40 inches of water into the southern cities of Texas. This amount of water ended a record 12 year drought. Some may consider the drought ending being a good thing, but most people say all this water has completely ruined their homes. One victim Tosha Atibu and his family said they had to flee northeastern Houston to get out of the way of the forceful flood waters. Atibu says that him and his family are now living in his broken down house. ” I know its not a safe place to be but… I have no other place to go.”. This is just one example of what people are dealing with in Texas.

As you can see, many people are struggling in Texas and there are some ways that you and your community can help them. Even if you are hundreds of miles away. You can donate food and supplies, and if you do live in Texas, you could volunteer for the American Red Cross. As you can see, Harvey has hit Texas very hard damaging and devastating people’s lives. Find out how you can help Texas in their struggle to rebuild the cities hit by Hurricane Harvey.

What Book did I Read Last?

The last book that I read was Tales of the Peculiar. It went along with the Miss Peregrine series. This was supposed to be the book that the children read when they went to bed. It was several tales about  multiple peculiar people. For example, one was about a little girl who could remove people’s nightmares, and another was about a princess who had scales and a forked tongue. The book I got at the library is called ” And I Darken”. I chose because I like historical fiction and that is what genre it is. I also picked this book because it was about Vlad Dracula and his family. I think this book is going to be about Vlad Dracula’s children growing up. So far, it has been about how Ladislav ( Vlad’s daughter) is really tough and is Dracula’s favorite child. It also talks about how Vlad’s younger son, Radu, is weak compared to the other boys. That is why I chose ” And I Darken” and  that is what book I read last.
